Track teams continue to show growth

Galesburg-Augusta’s mens track team had eight top five finishes and finished in third place while the Lady Rams had five top five finishes including one first place and placed eighth at the River Valley Mustang Invite at Three Oaks River Valley High School April 26.

Gobles won the mens event with 183 points and Three Oaks River Valley won the womens meet with 134.5 points.

The G-A girls, which finished with 36 points, received a first place finish from Jaidyn Klimp in the high jump with a personal record height of 5’0”.

John Klimp was G-A’s lone first place finisher in the mens event in the shot put with a distance of 41’5”.

Track teams fall to Saugatuck


The Galesburg-Augusta mens track team enjoyed 11 top 3 finishes and the women had six top five finishes but Saugatuck prevailed in both meets August 24.

The G-A men, which totaled 17 personal records, lost 80-48 and the Lady Rams, who had four personal records, lost by a score of 97-29.
G-A had five first place finishers in the mens race. Patrick Armock, with a personal record time of 17.65, placed first in the 110-meter hurdles, Conor Bortolussi finished first in the 300-meter hurdles with a personal record time of 47.17, John Klimp won the the shot put with a distance of 43’04.00”, the 4x100-meter relay team consisting of Levi Born, Adam Hubbard, Caden Smeltzer and Ben Smeltzer posted a time of 47.20 for a first place finish and the 4x200-meter relay team of Levi Born, Adam Hubbard, Ben Smeltzer and John Klimp placed first with a time of 1:37.56.

The G-A junior won the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.51, the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:02.41 and the high jjmp with a height of 4’10”.

Sophomore places 1st at tennis tournament


Galesburg-Augusta sophomore Lauren Gates placed first at the Niles Brandywine Tournament April 27.

G-A placed fourth at the tournament with three points. Niles Brandywine won the tournament with 11 points, followed by Kalamazoo Christian (8) and Kalamazoo Central (4).

Gates won her opening round match over Niles Brandywine’s Aleyna Vollman 6-4, 3-6, 10-7 and then the Ram xx defeated Kalamazoo Central’s Emeli Guanon 6-1, 6-0 to claim first place.

Sophia Corsi earned a win at No. 4 singles for G-A, 6-2, 6-2.

Kalamazoo Hackett Catholic Prep blanks G-A, 8-0

The Lady Rams were in action two days earlier and dropped an 8-0 decision to Kalamazoo Hackett Catholic Prep at Hackett.

The very strong Irish team won every singles match, 6-0, 6-0, with the exception at No. 1 singles where G-A’s Karlee Nigg did win one game, losing 6-0, 6-1.
Hackett swept all four doubles matches by default.

Schoolcraft won all four singles matches and claimed four more wins by forfeit in all four doubles matches to post an 8-0 win over the Galesburg-Augusta tennis team April 23.

Lauren Gates, at No. 3 singles, had a competitive first set, falling 6-7 before losing the second set 1-6.

G-A can’t overcome walks in loss to Hackett


The Galesburg-Augusta varsity softball team outhit Kalamazoo Hackett Prep 14-11 but the Irish took advantage of 10 walks issued by Ram pitchers and 16 stolen bases to post a 17-7 win in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader April 26 at Hackett.

Hackett was declared a 20-1 winner in the second game that was stopped after two innings because of rain and a lack of pitching for G-A.

Maureen McBride, who drove in one run and Rhyann Nichols, who had two RBI, each had three hits for G-A, now 4-12.

Breanna Keene pitched the first four and two-thirds innings and suffered the loss after allowing seven earned runs, seven hits and six walks. She struck out three Irish batters.

A nine-run first inning and 11-run second inning lifted Hackett to a 20-1 lead after two innings when the second game was stopped.

The first game against Plainwell April 9 that was recorded as Plainwell leading 9-0 in the fourth inning wound up as a 14-1 win for Plainwell in five innings.

Delton clips G-A twice


A big first inning in both games of a doubleheader helped Delton-Kellogg to 15-0 and 20-2 victories over the Lady Rams April 22 at Delton-Kellogg.

G-A was held to just one hit in the first game, a single by Rhyann Wilson.

The G-A bats were silent in the second game as well, as singles by Suzanna Nichols, Rhyann Wilson and Liliana Thompson were G-A’s lone hits.

Big innings lift G-A JV baseball team to 2 wins over Maple Valley

Double digit innings in both games of a doubleheader helped the Galesburg-Augusta JV baseball team to 22-3 and 20-2 wins over Maple Valley April 24 at Maple Valley.
G-A, now 7-0-1, exploded for 10 runs in the second inning in the first game while pounding out 11 hits.

Ethan Gibson had four hits to pace G-A.

Wes Hoffman was strong on the mound, allowing just one hit and one walk with four strikeouts across four innings for the win.

Gibson added three more hits including two triples and he drove in one run to lead G-A’s eight hit attack in the second game when the Rams pushed 11 runs across in the third inning in a 20-2 win for G-A.

 Kaiden Keiser did not allow a hit in three innings worked with four walks and two strikeouts to earn the win in the second game.
