On March 23, WMU-Cooley Law School students were recognized for outstanding academic achievement, professionalism and leadership roles with various student organizations during the law school’s Grand Rapids campus Honors Convocation.

The convocation began with opening remarks from WMU-Cooley adjunct professor and local attorney Wafa Adib-Lobo of Safe Harbor Legal PLC. During her remarks, Adib-Lobo provided encouragement for students preparing to take the bar exam.

“If I can do it, you can do it,” she said.

Students Millicent Southern, Carrie Trimpe, Cody Brooks and Kenyata McGill were the recipients of the Leadership Achievement Award, which acknowledges students who have consistently, comprehensively and effectively provided leadership in a variety of capacities.

Southern, originally from Chicago, has served as treasurer for the Organization of Women Lawyers, and senator of the Student Bar Association. She has also been a member of the Federal Bar Association, the Black Law Students Association and the International Law Society.

Trimpe, of Kalamazoo, has been associate editor of Law Review, vice competition chair of Mock Trial and senator of the Student Bar Association. She has also been a teaching assistant and a member of the Cooley Ambassador Program. Cooley Ambassadors are student volunteers who assist the school each term as a mentor and first friend to members of the incoming class during orientation.

Brooks, who was the subject of a profile in the April 4 Grand Rapids Legal News, has served as Student Development & Administration chair, Mock Trial Executive Board member, Moot Court treasurer, Federal Bar Association vice president and Law Review resource editor. He has also served as a teaching assistant, and was involved with the Mock Trial National Team and Liquor Law Society.

McGill is from Grand Rapids, and has been involved as a member of the Organization of Women Lawyers, treasurer of the Christian Legal Society and Student Bar Association senator.  She has also served as treasurer of the Student Federal Bar Association; president, vice president and member of the Black Law Students Association; and also a member of the Sports and Entertainment Law Society, Children’s Law Society and International Law Society.

Western Michigan University Cooley Law School resulted from the 2014 affiliation that combined WMU's status as a nationally-ranked, public, comprehensive research university with the commitment to practical legal education of an independent, non-profit, national law school. WMU-Cooley enrolls classes in January, May, and September at its Lansing, Auburn Hills, and Grand Rapids, Mich., campuses, and its Tampa Bay, Fla. campus. WMU and WMU-Cooley Law School operate as independent institutions with their own governance structure and separate fiduciary responsibilities.
