George Mertz named to 46th Circuit Court
Gov. Rick Snyder Monday appointed Gaylord resident George Mertz to the 46th Circuit Court, serving Kalkaska, Crawford and Otsego counties. The appointment fills the vacancy created by the death of Judge Dennis Murphy.
Mertz currently serves as an assistant general counsel for the Police Officers Association of Michigan as well as an adjunct faculty member at North Central Michigan College. He began his legal career as a law clerk in the Michigan Attorney General’s office and then in the 46th Circuit Court. Later, he served as an associate attorney at the Gaylord office of Plunkett Cooney P.C.
After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in history from Michigan State University, Mertz earned his law degree at the Detroit College of Law at Michigan State University.
Mertz will serve the remainder of Murphy’s term through Jan. 1, 2015. He will need to seek election for a full six-year term in November 2014.
DMBA to join with MCBA and OCBA in dodge ball challenge
The DMBA has been invited to participate as a special guest at this year’s charity “Challenge” between the Oakland and Macomb Bar Associations. This year’s friendly competition is a dodge ball tournament from 7 - 9 p.m. at Oakbrook Elementary School, 12060 Greenway, Sterling Heights, and we’re looking for a few enthusiastic individuals to be part of the fun. Each team will be made up of six players, and the DMBA may enter up to three teams in the competition. Each player will pay an entry fee of $12, with the proceeds being donated to a “home-town” charity of the winning bar association’s choice. Spectators are welcome, and there is no charge to come cheer the team on. Go to http://www.detroitlawyer.org/ upcomingevents.html for more information. To join the DMBA team, contact Joanne Golden at jgolden@divorcelaw1.com.
