 University establishes fund for three children of slain law student

At a candlelight vigil held Wednesday night in remembrance of Tiane Brown — a promising Wayne Law student — and in support of her family, Wayne State President M. Roy Wilson announced that the university would establish a fund to assist Brown’s children. The details on how to contribute are now available.

Checks should be made payable to Wayne State University and reference “The Tiane Brown Fund” on the memo line.  If donors would like notification to be sent to the Brown Family, they should provide their full contact information.

Wilson also announced that, after discussion with the WSU Board of Governors, Wayne State will offer free tuition to Brown’s three children if they choose to attend the university. Brown will receive her law degree posthumously in May 2014, when she was scheduled to graduate. 
 
 

Appeals court judge to address PALS, Nov. 13

 
The Polish American Legal Society will host a general meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 13,  beginning at 6 p.m. at the Polish Village Cafe, 2nd Floor, 2990 Yemens Ave. in Hamtramck.  The guest speaker will by Michigan Court of Appeals Judge Michael Talbot.  
Talbot was appointed to the Court of Appeals in 1998. Previously, He had been appointed by governors of Michigan to serve as a judge of the Wayne County Circuit, Detroit Recorder's, and Detroit Common Pleas courts. He also worked as an attorney in private practice.  Talbot received his bachelor's degree from Georgetown University and his law degree from the University of Detroit. He is currently serving as special judicial administrator for Detroit’s 36th District Court.

LAD to hold free family law workshop

 
Legal Aid and Defender Association, Inc. (LAD) will conduct a free workshop for residents of Wayne, Macomb and Oakland counties on family law in Michigan courts Thursday, Nov. 7 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Warren Public Library, 1 City Square, Suite 100, Warren. 
The workshop is one of a series conducted by LAD as part of its broad based advocacy program.  
Topics will include divorce procedures and requirements, division of marital assets, spousal and child support, custody and parenting time, and guardianship of minors.
 Registration is not required, but seating is limited and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. For further information, contact Tamika Smith-Jones, manager of LAD’s Macomb County office in Mount Clemens, at (586) 465-1344, ext. 5004.
