Federalist Society to host Q&A on ‘Unalienable Rights’ Sept. 16
Earlier this year, the Michigan Supreme Court convened a task force to address whether or not the state should continue to require licensed attorneys to maintain membership in the State Bar of Michigan. Although most states require bar membership to practice law, mandatory bars continue to be challenged in a number of states, trying to find ways that are less intrusive upon attorney’s First Amendment rights.
Join the Federalist Society for a question and answer session on “Unalienable Rights: The First Amendment Implications of a State Bar Association.” The speaker will be Richard McLellan, principle, McLellan Law Offices and chairman of the Michigan Law Revision Commission. There will also be an introduction given by Oakland County Circuit Judge Michael Warren.
The event will take place Sept. 16 from 8-9 a.m. at Plunkett Cooney, 38505 Woodward Ave., Ste. 2000 in Bloomfield Hills.

36th District Court judge named among ‘2014 Women in the Law’
Chief Judge Nancy M. Blount of the 36th District has been named among 30 honorees being recognized at a luncheon presented by the Michigan Lawyers Weekly at their “2014 Women in the Law” awards ceremony on Thursday, Sept. 11, at the Detroit Marriott located in Troy. The ceremony will honor those outstanding members of Michigan’s legal community who have made meaningful and inspiring contributions to the legal profession. The honorees were selected by a committee based on their outstanding professional accomplishments, mentoring and community involvement.
9/11 memorial planned at University of Michigan Diag
The recently founded Young Americans for Freedom chapter at the University of Michigan is sponsoring the “9/11: Never Forget Project” in Ann Arbor on Sept. 11 on the University of Michigan Diag. Consisting of 2,977 American flags (each flag representing a life lost on 9/11), the “9/11: Never Forget Project” seeks to engage the campus community in uniting to commemorate the occurrences of 9/11, and to honor the memories of those lost in the tragedy 13 years ago.
Young Americans for Freedom Advisor Rachel Jankowski says, "The 9/11: Never Forget Project is an annual chance for the University of Michigan community to come together and reflect on the attacks that happened 13 years ago. The students at this University were young children when the attacks occurred, but the effects have lingered for the majority of their lives. This memorial gives us perspective and serves as a remembrance for the 2,977 people killed that fateful day to ensure their memory lives on."
The flags will be displayed from 8 a.m.-8 p.m.
