DoNotPay honored with ABA Brown Award for access to justice efforts
The ABA Standing Committee on Delivery of Legal Services has selected DoNotPay, a legal app billed as the world’s first robot lawyer, to receive the 2020 Louis M. Brown Award for Legal Access.
The Louis M. Brown Award originated in 1995 and honors the work of Louis M. Brown, who for more than 60 years worked toward improving access to legal services for those of moderate incomes. The award itself honors the work of those who advance this mission in ways that are remarkable and replicable.
This year’s award honors DoNotPay’s commitment to increasing legal services to those of modest means, and specifically spotlights its innovative use of technology. DoNotPay, which is based in San Francisco, aims to improve the delivery of legal services and legal information through leveraging chatbots and cutting-edge artificial intelligence technology to provide automated services for common consumer and legal needs.
The Standing Committee on the Delivery of Legal Services is also recognizing Equal Justice Works Disaster Recovery Legal Corps with the 2020 Louis M. Brown Select Award. The Select Award is presented annually to the Brown Award nominee that receives the most online votes from the public. The Washington, D.C-based group mobilized 23 Fellows to go to deliver critical legal assistance to disaster-affected communities in Texas and Florid.
The ABA Standing Committee on the Delivery of Legal Services will present the awards on Friday, Feb. 14 during the 2020 ABA Midyear Meeting in Austin, Texas.
