Counselor's Corner: Thoughts on love

Affirming and kind words help a person see goodness in themselves.  A loving attitude toward another person helps a person feel positive.  When someone is loving and kind to me, I feel better about myself. When I am loving and kind toward someone else a positive connection between us begins. I don’t have to change anybody, but I do need to love everyone.  What the world needs most is love sweet love was sung years ago by Jackie DeShannon. So very true.

When I embrace negativity in my thoughts about others, I put myself into an emotional prison of pride and judgments about others. The last time someone told me how I should change it did not motivate me to change for the better. But the last time someone told me how they needed to change something in their own personal life, I was inspired and motivated to look deeper within myself.

When people become critical of me, it helps no one if I criticize back. But it helps everyone if I seek how I can respond in loving attentiveness to the other person who might criticize me or be upset with me.

Love brings all of us into a higher plane of existence. Love is always kind. It is always forgiving. It continues to disarm us all.

Have you ever watched a couple who have just witnessed the birth of their child?  The love that is poured out on  that helpless, little baby is marvelous to behold. And it is total unconditional love. The mother and father give of their best selves to this helpless infant. And this helpless infant thrives on the warmth and love of the mother’s and father’s touch. Because of  this love everyone experiences a healing presence.

Genuine love for another person is healing both for the other person and for the person reaching out in love. This simple act of loving someone has an amazing power.

So often the amazing power of love can get lost and minimized under the misguided perception of the need to correct and condemn. Of course, there are consequences to insensitive and cruel words and actions. But cruel and insensitive words and actions stem from a sense of internal and personal misery and an absence of feeling loved. Genuine spiritual and emotional health realizes the importance of consistency in showing love regardless of the lack of compassion and good character of other people.

When religion, politics, and misguided psychology invest in tearing down people instead of lifting them up,  healing and love disappear. Everyone needs love. It is what heals the heart and soul.

The purpose of life is to be turned toward a loving God and experience a God of love. Whether a person believes in a God or not,  everyone wants and needs to experience love. The more I experience love, the more I will have the desire to find a loving God in my life. The more I experience love,  the more I will be motivated to bring love to others.

Life is really very simple. Bring more love into your life. Love more. Forgive more. And keep loving everyone throughout your life. This simplicity will bring much wisdom into your life.

We celebrated our middle daughter’s 45th birthday this past Sunday. It  was a joyful celebration. As a gift she received a scrap book of her life. As I looked at that scrapbook with so many memories of her life,  I saw such love in the pictures of her life. And as I experienced this day, I felt such love from all the members of our family and all the grandchildren. And again, I thought of my loving, Italian grandmother who each grandchild felt so loved by and every spouse who married into our family felt the same way. Yes. What the world needs most, is love sweet love. May I have the courage to consistently bring love to everyone.
