Michigan Justice Fund supports Free Your Mind exhibition

The Michigan Justice Fund is proud to partner with the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum, the Prison Creative Arts Project at the University of Michigan, and Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD) to present the Free Your Mind exhibition highlighting art and incarceration in Michigan.

The exhibition uplifts the work and experiences of artists and advocates who are directly impacted by the carceral and criminal legal systems in Michigan. The Free Your Mind exhibition seeks to stimulate imagination and activate bold, solution driven responses towards creating a more equitable and just world.

The exhibition is housed at MOCAD in the Mike Kelley’s Mobile Homestead space at 4454 Woodward Ave. in Detroit.  The exhibition is open now through September 3.  To plan a visit, go to https://mocadetroit.org/free-your-mind.

‘Improving Access to Justice with Plain Language’ focus of webinar

The National Center for State Courts will present the webinar “Family-Centered Fridays—Improving Access to Justice with Plain Language” on Friday, May 19, at 4 p.m. via Zoom.

In the third installment of the Family-Centered Fridays Series, Senior Court Management Consultant Lonni Summers will lead a discussion on NCSC’s Plain Language Glossary, a tool that presents plain language alternatives to legal terms that are not understandable to most people.

In this session, Summers will explain the philosophy behind the Glossary and highlight how this tool can assist courts working to promote access to justice for families.

Summers is a senior court management consultant, focusing on access to justice. Before joining the NCSC, Summers directed the Maryland Judiciary’s statewide network of Court Help Centers, a high-volume program that offers free, civil legal help to unrepresented litigants from nine walk-in locations and a remote services center.

She began her legal career in general civil practice, staffing the award-winning District Court Help Center in Glen Burnie, Maryland. She is a graduate of Drexel University’s Thomas R. Kline School of Law.

Attendees will have a hands-on opportunity to use the glossary, suggest new terms and share real-world examples.

To register for the program, visit www.ncsc.org and click on “webinars.”
