Public welcome to attend Oakland County's first Juneteenth celebration

Oakland County will host its first Juneteenth celebration on Wednesday, June 14, to commemorate the official end of slavery in the United States. The program will begin at 11 a.m. in front of the Oakland County Circuit Court Building with musical performances from the Welcome Missionary Baptist Church Choir and Lauryn Herrin.

At noon, Oakland County Executive Dave Coulter will join other county officials to dedicate a Juneteenth plaque historical marker honoring Elizabeth Denison Forth—the first black woman to own property in Oakland County and Michigan—and raise the Juneteenth flag at the courthouse.

Speakers will include Oakland County Board of Commissioners Vice Chairwoman Marcia Gershenson, Commissioner Angela Powell of Pontiac, and Chief Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Officer Harry Weaver. Zach Zuchowicz, DEI and community engagement coordinator for Oakland County Parks and Recreation will announce free admission at Oakland County Parks on Juneteenth. At 1 p.m., storyteller Baba O and Nanou Djiapo, an African drum and dance group from Metro Detroit, will perform.

During the event, there will be a live deejay, giveaways, five food trucks (P’s & Q’s Bakery & Café from Pontiac, Heavenly Chicken & Waffles from Detroit, Fork in Nigeria from Detroit, Seoul Rolls on the Go from Pontiac, and Po Sam’s from Waterford), and meet and greet tables from county departments and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
