Webinar to focus on ‘Promoting Well-Being in Family Court’

The National Center for State Courts will present a webinar on “Promoting Well-Being in Family Court—Mental Health Considerations” Thursday, November 9, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. via Zoom.

This webinar is jointly sponsored by the NCSC, the Kansas Judicial Branch, and the National Center on Domestic Violence, Trauma, and Mental Health.

Attendees will delve into the multifaceted challenges families often face, from mental health issues to trauma, violence, and substance use disorders. Family courts play a pivotal role in overseeing such intricate cases, deciding parenting time, and discerning genuine concerns from potential misuse or weaponization of diagnoses.

Presenters will discuss individual and systemic changes that can help judges and staff:

• Understand the impact of stress and trauma on judges and court personnel.

• Assist families experiencing trauma and mental health conditions.

• Leverage early case interventions to improve case handling and stretch community resources.

• Navigate cases where mental health is potentially weaponized.

• Provide for child safety and well-being during family transitions.

Speaking at the webinar will be Keven M. P. O’Grady, district court judge, Tenth Judicial District, State of Kansas, Division 1 (Family Court); Carole Warshaw, director, National Center on Domestic Violence, Trauma, and Mental Health; and moderator Alicia Davis, principal court management consultant, Court Consulting Services.
