Lady Panthers use strong defense
to post win over Burr Oak


Climax-Scotts outscored Burr Oak 25-10 in the middle two quarters and went on to post a 46-31 win over the Bobcats January 17 at C-S Jr./Sr. High School.

C-S, 7-2 overall and still in first place atop the SCAA West Division with a 5-0 record, trailed the visitors by an 11-9 count after one quarter.

C-S put the defensive clamps on in the second quarter, allowing just two baskets and five different players scored for the Panthers, helping the home team to a 23-15 lead at halftime.

The tough defense spilled into the second half, as C-S gave up just a pair of three-point baskets by Burr Oak’s Braylyn Hernandez and outscored the visitors 11-6 for a 34-21 lead entering the third quarter.

Holly Talbert, who was 7-for-13 from the floor, led C-S in scoring with 16 points. She added four assists and seven steals.

Sophie Braithwaite, who had five rebounds and three steals, added 14 points on 3-for-6 shooting from the floor.

Climax-Scotts was held to single digits all four quarters, leading to a 34-16 loss to Bellevue for the Panther JV girls basketball team January 15 at C-S Jr./Sr. High School
C-S, now 0-3, fell behind 5-2 after one quarter, trailed by a 17-8 at halftime and faced a 30-10 deficit after three quarters.

Kameroyn Blair led C-S in scoring with eight points.

The JVs are scheduled to play at Athens January 23 and host Heritage Academy January 28 at 5:30 p.m., followed by a home game against Howardsville Christian January 30 at 5:30 p.m.

Panthers can’t catch Burr Oak


The Climax-Scotts boys varsity basketball team couldn’t overcome a hot start by Burr Oak in a 55-48 loss to the Bobcats January 17 at C-S Jr./Sr. High School.

C-S, now 1-7 overall and 1-4 in the SCAA West Division, fell behind by a 17-9 count after one quarter when Burr Oak connected on 5-of-10 two point attempts.

While C-S only shot 21 percent on 1-of-8 shooting from two-point range and 2-of-6 from the three-point line, the Panthers, behind eight points that included two three-point baskets from Ivan Abad-Reyes, outscored the Bobcats 12-8 in the second quarter to pull to within 25-21 at halftime.

Burr Oak, behind a 7-for-9 effort from the floor, was able to stretch the lead to 40-32 after three quarters before C-S outscored the visitors 16-15 in the fourth quarter but fell short.

Chase VanMiddlesworth scored 13 points to go with eight rebounds and two assists to lead. Ivan Abad-Reyes added 10 points, five rebounds and two assists.

C-S shot 29 percent overall from the floor including 33 percent (12-36) from two-point range and 20 percent (4-20) from three-point range.

Burr Oak shot 39 percent overall from the floor including a 49 percent (20-41) effort from two-point range and 1-for-13 (8 percent) from three-point range.

Burr Oak sneaks past
Panther JVs in 4th quarter


Burr Oak used a strong defensive effort in the third quarter and outscored Climax-Scotts 13-10 in the fourth quarter to register a 46-43 win over the Panther JV boys basketball team January 16 at Burr Oak.

The loss snaps a seven-game winning streak for C-S, which drops to 7-3 with the setback.

C-S led by a 27-25 count at halftime but managed just two baskets from the floor and a pair of free throws in the third quarter with the two teams entering the fourth quarter tied 33-33.
The Bobcats, who connected on six three-point baskets, knocked down a trio of triples in the final stanza to pull out the win.

Mason Shannon, who knocked down two three-point baskets, led C-S in scoring with 18 points. Dustin Crandall added 10 points.

Defense Key in Win over Bellevue


The Climax-Scotts JV boys basketball team held Bellevue to single digits in each of the first three quarters to register a 40-22 win over the Broncos January 15 at C-S Jr./Sr. High School.
The win was C-S’ seventh straight.

Both teams got off to a slow start, however the Panthers, behind eight points from Mason Shannon, carried an 8-3 lead into the second quarter.

The tough C-S defense held the visitors to two baskets from the floor in the second frame and took a 17-7 lead into halftime before outscoring Bellevue 18-5 for a 35-12 lead after three quarters.

Five place for C-S-M at ultra competitive
Hudson Super 16 Tournament


Five members of the Climax-Scotts-Martin co-op wrestling team placed at the very competitive Hudson Super 16 Tournament January 17 in Hudson.

Dundee won the 32-team tournament with 209 points, while C-S-M finished sixth with 95.5 points.

Haylen Buell (144-pound weight class) earned a second place finish, Urijah Joostberns (113), and Logan Gilbert (120), both placed third, Jayce Ritchie (138) placed fifth and Jackson Bagwell (157) placed sixth.

Buell won his first three matches by a pin in 23 seconds, technical fall (20-4) and by a 5-3 decision before falling in the first place match by a 7-3 decision.

Gilbert posted wins in his first two matches by a pin in 43 seconds and 17-2 technical fall before falling by a major decision (16-8) and finishing with a 9-3 decision.

The C-S senior has 164 career wins entering a SAC dual meet at Coloma January 22. Jordan Tutt is the school record holder for career wins at C-S with a record of 188-37.

Joostberns received a bye, won by a pin in 3:08, lost by a pin in 3:17 and placed third with a 10-0 major decision.

Ritchie won his opening match by a technical fall (16-0), lost his second match by a pin in 3:49, won his third match by a 15-0 technical fall, won a 5-2 decision and captured fifth place with a 18-2 technical fall.

Bagwell claimed a 12-4 major decision in his first match, lost by a pin, bounced back to post an 18-15 decision and a 11-3 major decision before falling in the fifth place match by a 9-1 major decision.

After a SAC dual at Coloma January 22, C-S-M will wrestle in the Leslie Tournament January 25 and wrestle in another SAC quad at Fennville January 29.

Eight members of the Climax-Scotts-Mendon co-op wrestling team placed at the Hudson Super 16 B Tournament January 17 at Hudson.

Logan Curry (138-pound weight class) placed first with a 4-0 record, Brayan Simbron (285), with a 2-1 record placed second, Cole Birkam (215) placed third with a 2-1 record and a bye, Lucas Totten (120) with a 1-2 record and a bye, Kaden Godbee (132) with a 1-2 record and a bye, and Johnathan Collver (175) with a 2-2 record, all placed fourth, and Jacques Porlier (120) with a 2-2 record and a bye and Nate Arnett (126), with a 1-2 record and two byes, both placed sixth.

C-S-M Splits in SAC Quad at Martin


A split by the Climax-Scotts-Martin co-op wrestling team at a SAC dual at Martin January 15 left the co-op wrestling teams’ record at 15-1.

C-S-M defeated Delton-Kellogg 70-12 and lost to Allegan, 38-33.

Individual results from the Delton-Kellogg match were not available, however C-S coach Mike Reitz said Logan Gilbert recorded a pin.

Winning head to head bouts in the Allegan match included Jacinto Lopez (106), by a pin in 5:22, Urijah Joostberns (113), by a 11-9 decision, Cole Reitz (132), by a pin in 2:55, Haylen Buell (150), by a 14-3 major decision, Jackson Bagwell (157) by a 17-8 major decision, Sam Bleeker (215), by a 13-0 major decision. Logan Gilbert (120) won by a forfeit.
