Legal Aid and Defender to hold free outreach clinics at H.O.P.E.
Legal Aid and Defender Association will hold civil legal services for income-eligible residents of Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties, including the city of Detroit, on Wednesday, Feb. 9 and Wednesday, Feb. 23  from 9 a.m. to noon at H.O.P.E. Center, 33222 Groesbeck Highway, Fraser. Attendees are asked to register before 10 a.m., as LAD staff will assist only those persons who have registered by that time.

Honigman’s Kanan moderates panel on international business
John P. Kanan, a partner in the Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn’s Corporate and Securities Department, recently served as moderator for a panel discussion regarding legal issues arising in cross-border transactions between the U.S. and Asia.  The event was hosted by the Asian Pacific American Chamber of Commerce at Lawrence Technological University.

The panel discussion touched on topics such as the process of importing goods from overseas, issues regarding misappropriation of trade secrets, selecting a partner in Asia, cultural challenges and money repatriation issues.

Kanan focuses his practice on counseling publicly- and privately-held businesses, their owners and directors, and serves as outside general counsel for a number of companies in a wide-variety of industries, including manufacturing, venture capital and private equity, technology and insurance.  He also focuses on the formation and certification of minority-owned and woman-owned companies and joint ventures; software and technology licensing and development agreements; international business transactions; acquisitions and divestitures; and representation of the U.S. operations of non-U.S. headquartered companies.

Kanan was recognized in DBusiness magazine’s list of Top Lawyers for 2010 and 2011. Kanan earned a J.D., magna cum laude, from University of Notre Dame Law School, and an A.B. in Communications and English Literature, with distinction, from University of Michigan.

The Rochester Bar Association (RBA) will host guest speaker State Bar of Michigan President W. Anthony Jenkins on Tuesday, Feb. 8, from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Rochester Mills Beer Company located at 400 Water Street in Rochester.
