Crop Circles

The University of Detroit Mercy School of Law is co-sponsoring with the Real Property Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan the Second Annual Urban Farming Symposium on Friday, May 18, from 8 a.m. - noon at the Riverfront Campus located at 651 East Jefferson Avenue in downtown Detroit.

Earthworks Urban Farm grows food on 2.5 acres of land on Detroit’s east side. These fruits and vegetables are mostly part of the 2,000 meals served daily at the Capuchin Soup Kitchen and local gardeners are also supported. The group also educates adults and youth about farming.

For more information about Earthworks Urban Farm, call 313-579-2100 ext. 204 or go to their website at www.cskdetroit.org/earthworks.

Earthworks Urban Farm is one of many urban farming cooperatives that have “cropped up” to take advantage of Detroit’s plentiful open land.

The UDM Law symposium is open to the public but is primarily focused on the law and planning organizations, with special attention paid to the legal and policy issues of urban farming.

Symposium speakers include Neil Hamilton of Drake University; Brad Deacon of the Michigan Department of Agriculture & Rural Development; Kathryn Colasanti of the Mott Group for Sustainable Food Systems at MSU; and Melanie Duda, an expert in urban agriculture.
