Cooley students to receive degrees

Sunday, Sept. 22, marks Cooley Law School’s 114th graduating class since it was founded in 1972. Students from Cooley’s four Michigan campuses will be presented with their juris doctor (197) and master of laws (19) degrees.

James C. Morton, litigation partner with Steinberg, Morton, Hope & Israel, LLP, will present the keynote during the ceremonies. Morton has taught at Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto, Ontario and Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing.  He is a widely published author, teacher and frequent media commentator.

Each entering class at Cooley bears the name of a distinguished member of the legal profession. The Sept. 2013 class is named after former U.S. Supreme Court Justice William Johnson. He served on the Supreme Court from 1905-1833. Justice Johnson paved the way for other free thinkers to express their views on the record. By championing dissent, Johnson gave generations of judges, scholars, lawyers, students, and citizens the benefit of seeing all angles of an issue.

The ceremony begins at 1 p.m. at the Wharton Center for Performing Arts in East Lansing.
