Snyder vetoes bill to update corporate officer liability law

Gov. Rick Snyder on Tuesday vetoed Senate Bill 64 of 2013. The measure would have made changes to Michigan’s corporate officer liability law.

“This bill offered many useful updates to corporate officer liability in our state,” Snyder said. “However, work on this issue continued after the bill was approved and I am confident that current legislation being considered provides a better solution to these issues.”
SB 64 was sponsored by state Sen. Jack Brandenburg. Snyder said SB 337, also sponsored by Brandenburg, improves upon SB 64, and resulted from discussions between the Senate, House, Snyder’s administration, and the business community.

Man whose 7-year-old daughter died in police raid faces trial

DETROIT (AP) — A man whose 7-year-old daughter was killed by Detroit police is on trial for a homicide that preceded the fatal raid four years ago.
Police were looking for a suspect when an officer’s gun went off, striking Aiyana Stanley-Jones as she slept on a couch in May 2010.
Her father Charles Jones is charged with providing a gun that was used in the shooting of 17-year-old Je'Rean Blake, who was killed outside a store. Chauncey Owens is charged with pulling the trigger.
Jury selection began Tuesday in Wayne County Circuit Court.
Meanwhile, Aiyana’s death still is unresolved. Officer Joseph Weekley is back in court in February, months after a jury couldn't reach a verdict in his involuntary manslaughter trial.
