The Third Circuit Court Civil, Criminal and Family Divisions will be closed on Monday, May 26, in observance of Memorial Day.

In observance of Memorial Day, the 36th District Court will be closed to the public on Monday, May 26. Felony arraignment hearings will be held at the 34th District Court in Romulus. The court will reopen on Tuesday, May 27.
The Wayne County Probate Court will be closed in observance of Memorial Day on Monday, May 26 and will reopen on Tuesday, May 27,  at 8 a.m.
The Michigan Supreme Court, the Court of Appeals, and the State Court Administrative Office will be closed Monday, May 26, in observance of Memorial Day.
 

DMBA Meet’n’Learn to be held at downtown Hard Rock Cafe May 22

The location of the Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association’s Meet’n’Learn “In-House Thoughts on Outside Counsel” has changed. The event will be held from 5:30-6:30 p.m. May 22 at Hard Rock Cafe, 45 Monroe Street in downtown Detroit. Listen in as in-house lawyers Antoinette Porter and Brian Sadek discuss the good, bad and ugly of their interactions with outside counsel. No registration required; free for DMBA members and just $5 for all others.
 

Gov. Snyder signs bills to help improve courtroom efficiency

Gov. Rick Snyder recently signed legislation streamlining the process of preliminary hearings at the district court level. Snyder called for improvements to the hearing process in his public safety special message in March 2012.
House Bill 5154, sponsored by state Rep. Tom Leonard, revises the procedures associated with preliminary examinations in Michigan criminal proceedings. District courts will be required to offer teleconference and video options for certain witnesses, allow certain types of hearsay evidence and offer a probable cause conference within 14 days of arraignment. The bill also authorizes district courts to accept felony pleas.
HB 5155, sponsored by state Rep. John Walsh, expands the jurisdiction of the district courts as necessary to allow for the preliminary hearing reforms in HB 5154.
 

Legal Aid and Defender to hold annual charity golf outing June 20

 Legal Aid and Defender Association, Inc. will hold its 16th annual charity golf outing on Friday, June 20 at the Links of Novi, 50395 W. 10 Mile Road, Novi. The outing is open to the public. Donations are $125 for single players and $400 for foursomes. They include 18 holes of golf, continental breakfast, lunch, and dinner and awards ceremony at 3 p.m..
A variety of sponsorship and underwriting opportunities are available. Payments must be received no later than Thursday, June 12.
