Jewish Bar Association of Michigan hosts inaugural event

On Wednesday, Sept. 17, the newly formed Jewish Bar Association of Michigan (JBAM) hosted its opening event, a social get-together at Local Kitchen and Bar in Ferndale.  Among those happy to take part in the launch of the new group were (l-r) Frank Mamat of Foster, Swift, Collins, & Smith PC; Jonathan Schwartz of Seyburn, Kahn, Ginn, Bess, & Serlin PC; Royal Oak attorney Rachel Loebl; Keith Sirlin of Keith Sirlin & Associates PC; Ellie Mosko of Ellis Porter PLC; retired Judge Edward Sosnick; Andrew Cohen of Cohen Law Office PC; and David Sachs.

The newly formed Jewish Bar Association of Michigan (JBAM) held its opening event, a social get-together, on Wednesday, Sept. 17, at Local Kitchen and Bar in Ferndale. Over 220 judges, lawyers, students, and other legal professionals were in attendance. JBAM’s mission is to work with Jewish organizations to provide pro-bono legal aid, create mentoring opportunities, offer educational classes and programs to its members, and partner with other organizations to support the community.The goal is to be a multi-generational legal organization offering something for everyone.
 
The association is not limited to attorneys and those interested don’t need to be Jewish to join.Anyone who has a connection to law or wants to network with attorneys is encouraged to join. 

JBAM’s recently elected officers are: Rachel Loebl, president; Ellie Mosko, vice president; Andrew Cohen, vice president of finance/ treasurer; Jonathan Schwartz, vice president of communications/ secretary; and Keith Sirlin, head advisor.
The following JBAM events are already set, with more to come. 

• On October 14, JBAM is hosting an event with AIPAC’s Past President David Victor, who will speak and answer questions on the upcoming U.S. elections, and their impact on U.S.-Israel relations.

• On October 27, JBAM is partnering with Chabad in the D for a Jewish Attorney Mixer at Two James Bar in Corktown, including a tour of the distillery. 

• As part of JBAM’s mission for continuing education, JBAM will present a Real Estate Law Seminar; “What Every Good Real Estate Attorney Needs to Know,” on November 6, including lunch.JBAM members are invited to attend for free.

• On November 20, JBAM is teaming up with Federation’s FedEd, and Wayne State University. Professor Howard Lupovitch will be speaking on “The Law of the Land is the Law…When Jewish and Civil Law Collide.”JBAM members are invited to attend for free.

JBAM member rates are $15 for student, new-grad, or not yet licensed; $50 for lawyer under 10 years and non-lawyer; and $75 for lawyer over 10 years practice
