Lawyer recognized as ‘Member of the Month by WLAM of Michigan


Brooks Kushman Associate Rachel A. Smith will be recognized as the Women Lawyers Association of Michigan (WLAM) Member of the Month in honor of her acceptance in the 2016 Oakland Executive’s Elite 40 Under 40.

The WLAM is a statewide organization that provides wide-ranging networking and professional development opportunities for women lawyers. WLAM is dedicated to securing the rights of women in society, advancing the interests of women members of the legal profession, promoting improvements in the administration of justice, and promoting equality and social justice for all people. WLAM has seven regional chapters and three student chapters for different campuses of Cooley Law School, and the state board has been active in facilitating and supporting the formation of new regions. The association recognizes “Members of the Month” who have demonstrated leadership in their practice, received an honorable award or recognition, and who serve as a role model for other members of the organization.

Smith has been awarded the 2016 Oakland Executive’s Elite 40 Under 40 for her unparalleled commitment and focus on client service, in addition to her work in the legal and local community to help women advance through networking and to educate young females on the importance of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education.

Smith specializes in preparing and prosecuting patent applications in the mechanical and electrical arts. She represents clients in the consumer electronics, automotive, medical device and IT network industries. Her practice further includes drafting patentability, infringement, validity and freedom to operate opinions.

Smith earned her Juris Doctor from Wayne State University in Detroit and a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from Ohio Northern University in Ada. She is a member of the State Bar of Michigan, the Oakland County Bar Association, the Women’s Bar Association of Oakland County, and the United State Patent and Trademark Office. She is also the Secretary of the Michigan Intellectual Property Law Association and serves on the Women in IP Law Committee for the American Intellectual Property Law Association.
