Murkowski elected president of MPJA


Judge David M. Murkowski, Chief Judge of the Kent County Probate Court, was elected president of the Michigan Probate Judges Association (MPJA) by his peers at the association’s annual conference held at the Black Lake Conference Center in Onaway, Michigan.  Murkowski will take office Oct. 1, 2016.

Judge Murkowski previously served as council member of the Probate and Estate Planning Section of the State Bar of Michigan and was a contributor to the drafting of the Michigan Trust Code.  He is a recipient of the Judicial Contributions in Law and Aging Award from Elder Law of Michigan and the Leader in the Law Award from Lawyers Weekly. 

“The purpose of our association is to promote justice, professional excellence and respect for the law, to foster the dignity and integrity of the judiciary, and to serve the needs of our members and the larger legal community,” said Murkowski.  “There is no finer group of men or women dedicated to the administration of justice than the members of the Michigan Probate Judges Association.”

 

Levin Center to host director of national drug control policy
 

On Tuesday, Sept. 13, the Levin Center at Wayne State University Law School will host a community discussion at a Detroit health center on the opioid epidemic featuring Michael Botticelli, director of national drug control policy.

Botticelli, who has met with stakeholders across the country to highlight innovative solutions to the opioid epidemic, will join former U.S. Sen. Carl Levin and Detroit-area physicians and treatment center providers to call for community solutions to this epidemic, including expanding access to medication-assisted treatment such as buprenorphine.

The program will run from 9-10:10 a.m. at the  Community Health and Social Services Center, 5635 W. Fort St., in Detroit.
Speakers will include:

• Michael Botticelli, director of national drug control policy, speaking about federal actions on the opioid epidemic, including expanding access to treatment;

• J. Ricardo Guzman, CEO of Community Health and Social Services and chairman of the National Association of Community Health Centers;

• Dr. Jamie Hall, a provider with Community Health and Social Services and senior staff physician in the Department of Family Medicine of the Henry Ford Medical Group;

• Former U.S. Sen. Carl Levin, chair of the Levin Center at Wayne Law and the law school’s distinguished legislator in residence;

• Dr. George Sawabini, a Detroit area physician and registered pharmacist who is certified to prescribe medication assisted therapy for opiate addiction and is board certified by the American Society of Addiction Medicine.
