WLAM Foundation announces new Florence King Scholar in Patent Law scholarship

The Women Lawyers Association of Michigan Foundation (WLAMF) announced this week the new Florence King Scholar in Patent Law award. Funded by prominent women lawyers who practice in the area of patent law, the $3,000 Florence King scholarship will be given to an outstanding woman law student attending one of Michigan's five accredited law schools.

The award joins ten other WLAMF awards to be presented at WLAMF's annual event on Thursday, March 23.

The award has been named in honor of Florence King, the first female patent attorney in the U.S. and the first certified female member of the American Association of Engineers. She graduated from Mount Morris College in 1891. She was also the president of the Chicago Woman's Association of Commerce and an avid suffragette.

Female students seeking a career in patent law who are enrolled in University of Michigan Law School, Western Michigan Cooley Law School, Michigan State University College of Law, Wayne State University Law School, or University of Detroit Mercy School of Law, are in good standing and demonstrate leadership capabilities in advancing the position of women in society, are eligible for the award.

The scholarship has been funded by attorneys Kristen L. Pursley and Farrah N. Arif, The Dobrusin Law Firm; Erin Morgan Klug, Varnum, LLP; Denise M. Glassmeyer, Michelle L. Knight and Francine B. Nesti, Young Basile; Stephanie D. Jones, General Motors; Kristin L. Murphy, Brooks Kushman as well as Linda D. Kennedy of Pratt & Whitney.

The WLAMF annual awards will be presented on March 23 at the Rust Belt Market in the Ferndale Plaza Shopping Center, 210 W. Nine Mile Rd, Ferndale, in a reception beginning at 6 p.m. For information about the WLAMF awards, annual event sponsorships and tickets, contact wlamfmi@gmail.com or 248.740.7003.
