OCBA to present seminar on urban farming June 22

Planting City Roots: Advising the Urban Agriculture Enterprise is the title of a seminar that will take place on Thursday, June 22 at 5:30 p.m. at the Oakland County Bar Association in Bloomfield Hills.

Panelists include Michael Score, president of Hantz Farms; Tyson Gersh, co-founder and president of The Michigan Urban Farming Initiative; and attorney Greg Gamalski, of Giarmarco, Mullins & Horton. Attorney David Michael of Lipson, Neilson, Cole, Seltzer, Garin will moderate. They will discuss the case for welcoming agriculture to urban neighborhoods and communities; the legal and public policy issues facing urban agriculture enterprises large and small; “agrihoods;” and regulating medical marijuana growers under the revised Medical Marijuana Act.

“What do backyard, roof-top and balcony gardens; community gardens in vacant lots and parks; roadside urban fringe agriculture; and livestock grazing in open space all have in common? They are all considered urban agriculture and they are likely coming to a nearby city or suburb, if they haven’t already,” a program spokesman said. “This program, presented by the OCBA’s Real Estate Law Committee, features a panel of experts using an engaging conversational approach to address the challenges faced by urban agriculture enterprises here in Michigan and how legal practitioners can best advise this type of client.”

Pre-registration is recommended since seating is limited. Pre-registration for this seminar ends June 21; however, walk-ins are welcome.  To register, go to www.ocba.org/events.
The OCBA offices are located at 1760 South Telegraph Road, Suite 100, Bloomfield Hills, MI 48302.
