SBM's Marijuana Law Section second annual conference a success

The State Bar of Michigan’s Marijuana Law Section held its second annual conference in Detroit Sept. 7-9. More than 150 people participated in the three-day event.

Attendees heard presentations from the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs on the implementation of the Facilities Licensing Act, as well as presentations on a range of topics including tax and banking issues, the status of communities “opting in” to allow marijuana businesses, and defenses for marijuana-related criminal offenses.

National speakers such as Paul Armentano, Andrew Ittleman, and Jeremy Unruh joined many other speakers to make the event a success. A highlight of the conference was Detroit Red Wings hockey great Darren McCarty speaking at the conference where he also signed autographs and posed for numerous photos.

“I was blown away,” said criminal defense litigator Takura Nyamfukudza. “The caliber of speakers could not have been higher. Wherever the next conference is, I know that I will learn a lot and make new friends.”

“The event was an absolute success,” said Section Chairperson Daniel Grow. “We are pleased that we offered such high-quality and cutting edge education to the attendees. The range of topics related to cannabis law is vast, and everyone on the council of the State Bar of Michigan’s Marijuana Law Section was excited to provide ongoing education on these topics to our members and communities throughout the state.”
