Crime Stoppers of Michigan to hold annual fundraising dinner

DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) — Crime Stoppers of Michigan is holding its annual recognition dinner at the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation in Dearborn.

The Oct. 3 event raises funds for the nonprofit organization. Crime Stoppers works to make neighborhoods, schools and businesses safer by encouraging people to help law enforcement by using an anonymous tip line.

Ford Motor Co. is the dinner's host sponsor.

Crime Stoppers of Michigan operates in Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, St. Clair, Washtenaw, and Wayne counties. Its 1-800-SPEAK-UP tip line offers cash rewards for information leading to arrests.

Crime Stoppers of Michigan says it has received more than 24,000 anonymous tips from the public since 2013 and has awarded more than $300,000 to anonymous tipsters.

Walk marks 10 years since woman’s death

STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. (AP) — An annual 5K walk in Michigan is honoring a woman who was killed by her husband 10 years ago.

The 10th Tara Walk in memory of murder victim Tara Grant will be held Saturday in Sterling Heights. Organizers say the event raises awareness of violence in the home as it also kicks off Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October.

Grant was killed in 2007 by her husband Stephen Grant, who was found guilty of second-degree murder. The case gained nationwide attention due to the grisliness of the murder and the husband's public denials.

Stephen Grant is serving 50 to 80 years at the Bellamy Creek Correction Facility in Ionia.

Proceeds from the walk will go toward the Tara Grant Liberation Fund, which helps domestic violence survivors leave abusive situations.
