'Lids for Kids' a success

Michigan’s annual bike helmet giveaway and bicycle safety event, “Lids for Kids,” recently wrapped up another successful season. Concluding its 17th year in Lansing, alongside the 6th year in Grand Rapids event, and 4th year in Traverse City event, 2019 has been the most successful season of “Lids for Kids.”

The “Lids for Kids” program properly fitted more than 1,700 Michigan children with free helmets. Traverse City kickstarted the season, giving away 479 helmets, starting a snowball effect for the rest of the season. Lansing’s event had the largest turn out since 2008, giving away 575 helmets to mid-Michigan children. Grand Rapids concluded the season while also making Lids for Kids history — 659 West Michigan community children received free, properly fitting helmets to ensure summer safety.

“If there are wheels beneath their feet, there should be a helmet on their head,” said attorney Tom Sinas.

A properly fitting bike helmet reduces the chance of brain and head injuries by up to 88%. Studies also show that 9 out of 10 kids will wear their helmets if their parents wear theirs.

Though each of these events occur in separate communities, they all share the same goal: protect Michigan’s youth, while adding a little fun, too.

Sinas Dramis Law Firm makes these events community oriented by partnering with Michigan Association of Justice, Brain Injury Association of Michigan (BIAMI), and Origami Brain Injury Rehabilitation Center, alongside local community sponsors in each area of the event.

While the main goal is to protect the youth of Michigan, each event turns into a community festival. With bike donations from each of the sponsors, community vendors donating their time and products to bring families out, and trained professionals fitting the youth, the events have become family outings each year. Each event hosts a bike raffle, alongside other supplemented raffle donations. In addition to receiving a free helmet, each child has a chance to go home with a free bike, or another community prize.

Established in 1951, Sinas Dramis Law Firm gives back to the community by hosting events such as “Lids for Kids” to prevent future injuries.
