WMU-Cooley assistant dean honored as member of 2019 class of Women in the Law

WMU-Cooley Law School Professor and Assistant Dean Mable Martin-Scott has been named to the “Women in the Law” Class of 2019 by Michigan Lawyers Weekly. Martin-Scott is among 30 attorneys chosen for the annual honor, which includes WMU-Cooley graduates Chelsea M. Rebeck, partner at Rebeck & Allen in Southfield; and Rebecca L. Wilson, shareholder with The Dobrusin Law Firm in Pontiac.

Each year, the Women in the Law program recognizes high-achieving women lawyers in Michigan and their accomplishments. The 10th annual Women in the Law awards took place on Thursday, September 5, at the Detroit Marriott Troy.

As an expert in contracts and banking, Martin-Scott teaches Contracts I and II, Sales, and Commercial Papers and is assistant dean at WMU-Cooley’s Lansing campus.  

Before joining WMU-Cooley, Martin-Scott was chief administrative law judge for the state of Indiana's Unemployment Insurance Review Board. She served as state purchasing director, as well as general counsel for the Indiana Department of Administration.

In addition, Martin-Scott has served as an adjunct business law professor for the Indiana Vocational Technical College, as well as an administrative appeals judge and assistant city attorney for the city of Evansville, Indiana. She also worked in private practice, handling criminal and civil matters with a primary emphasis in employment law and domestic relations.

Martin-Scott belongs to the state bars of Michigan and Indiana, and is admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court, Southern District of Indiana. She is a member of the National Association of Unemployment Insurance Appellate Boards and the National Association of State Purchasing Officials (Executive Committee 1991-1993).

Rebeck, a tax attorney and CPA/CGE with an LL.M. in taxation, is a frequent volunteer at tax clinics for low-income individuals. She serves on the tax pro-bono panel and the Diversity and Inclusion advisory board with the State Bar of Michigan.

Wilson is a copyright and trademark attorney and a member of the State Bar of Michigan’s Intellectual Property Law Section. Her clients include entrepreneurs and small startup businesses. Wilson volunteers with the Arthritis Foundation and is involved with A Beautiful Me, helps young girls build confidence.
