Judge sides with farmer battling state over swine
BARAGA, Mich. (AP) — A judge has sided with a farmer in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula who has battled state regulators for seven years over the pigs he raises.
Circuit Judge Charles Goodman ruled last Thursday the Department of Natural Resources had failed to prove that Roger Turunen’s pigs were covered by a 2010 order banning Eurasian boars and other exotic swine.
The DNR says the sharp-tusked animals are escaping from farms and hunting ranches and damaging crops and the environment.
Turunen contends his Baraga County hogs are not Russian boars, but domestic animals derived from heritage breeds.
Goodman ruled the DNR failed to show what characteristics made Turunen’s pigs illegal and that the invasive species order was vague.
Detroit’s Orchestra Hall celebrating centennial many ways in October
DETROIT (AP) — An acoustical and architectural gem in Detroit is turning 100, and the milestone is being marked in numerous ways.
Centennial celebrations for Orchestra Hall include a free concert on Oct. 23 by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, which makes its home on the stage. Orchestra officials say the venerated hall’s grand opening was on Oct. 23, 1919, and next month’s concert is dubbed “A Century of Pops.”
The DSO’s season launches Oct. 4-6 with a restaging of the opening concert, featuring pieces by Beethoven, Bach, Mozart and Weber.
The anniversary also is being celebrated with a commemorative book, documentary and exhibition created with the Detroit Historical Society and Museum.
Dispute Resolution Center recruits, trains volunteer mediators
Wayne County Dispute Resolution Center (WCDRC), a community based nonprofit organization, is currently seeking volunteers for mediation training to further its mission of helping change the culture of conflict in Wayne County.
“With mediation, we help to peacefully resolve conflicts efficiently and effectively, said Bernard Dempsey, WCDRC’s executive director. “Last year, our staff and volunteers mediated 2,300 conflicts, helping more than 5,000 people.”
Mediations are conducted at WCDRC’s office in Dearborn as well as in courthouses and schools throughout Wayne County.
To become a mediator, volunteers must take a state approved 40-hour training session. Each class runs from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The first class will be held on Saturday, Nov. 2, with subsequent classes on Thursdays, Nov. 7 and 14; and Fridays, Nov. 8 and 15. Training is held at WCDRC’s office in the Dearborn Atrium Office Center at 835 Mason Street, Suite C300 in Dearborn.
