Butzel Long hosts free webinar today at 9 a.m.: ‘An Employer’s Guide to the New Families First Coronavirus Response Act’

The Families First Coronavirus Response Act will help many American families dealing with the impact by providing increased funding for food, Medicaid, unemployment assistance, and coverage for testing. However, it also significantly impacts small and medium businesses through the Emergency Family and Medical Leave Expansion Act (EFMLA) and the Emergency Paid Sick Leave Act (EPSLA), requiring certain employers to front the costs of paid leave to employees affected by coronavirus in various ways.

Attorneys from Butzel Long law firm’s Labor and Employment Group are hosting a free informational webinar from 9-10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 25. This webinar will help businesses break down the Act to determine what they need to do to prepare and what the expectations are when the Act becomes effective April 2, 2020.To register, visit www.butzel.com/events.

The webinar will answer and discuss key questions including:

• What employers are covered and what employers are exempt?

• How are an employer’s paid time off policies impacted?

• Are employees who are unable to work because their children’s schools are closed eligible for leave benefits under both EFMLA and EPSLA?

Presenters include:

• Brett Miller is chair of the firm’s Employment Practices Liability Insurance Sub-Practice. He focuses his practice on employment and labor law.

• Brett Rendeiro concentrates his practice in labor and employment law and has evolved into a trial advocate with substantial experience in employment and complex commercial disputes.

FBA, Eastern District of Michigan Chapter postpones Gilman luncheon scheduled for April 22

In light of the recent federal, state and local directives, the Federal Bar Association Eastern District of Michigan leadership announced Tuesday that it has decided to postpone the Gilman luncheon originally scheduled for April 22.

“We will be keeping close watch on when the current environment changes. If there is a time within this Chapter year that we can safely and responsibly coordinate a rescheduled event, we will let you know,” FBA leadership said in a statement.

The Gilman committee will remain active and will solicit nominations for the 2020 Gilman Award. In the event that the Chapter is not able to reschedule the luncheon, the Chapter will present the award at its Annual Dinner, which currently remains on the calendar for June 17, 2020 at the Atheneum Hotel in Greektown.
