For the first time ever, two Wayne State University Law School teams advanced to the final rounds of the American Bar Association National Appellate Advocacy Competition, with one team receiving the award for Fourth Best Brief in the country.

Oral arguments for the competition were originally scheduled to take place in Chicago April 2-4 but were canceled due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Competitors on the first Wayne Law team were Kayce Nieto, Benjamin Wu and brief-writer Meagan Dreher, who took home the award for Fourth Best Brief in the nation. Competitors on the second team were Jeffrey Hewlett, Emma Trivax and brief-writer Elyse Lisznyai. The teams were coached by Wayne Law faculty member Amy Neville.

The teams qualified for the national finals in February after placing at the regional competition in Philadelphia.

The team of Nieto, Wu and Dreher were undefeated throughout the competition and earned the region's award for Third Best Brief. The team of Hewlett, Trivax and Lisznyai also finished as finalists in the regional competition. Six regional competitions were held throughout the country from which only 25 teams advanced to the national rounds.

One of the most prestigious moot court competitions in the country, the ABA's National Appellate Advocacy Competition emphasizes the development of oral advocacy skills through a realistic appellate advocacy experience.

Moot court competitors participate in a hypothetical appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court. The competition involves writing a brief as either respondent or petitioner and then arguing the case in front of the mock court, consisting of practicing attorneys and members of the judiciary.
