Law students honored by Clinical Legal Education Association

Eight Wayne State University Law School students and recent graduates were awarded a 2020 Outstanding Clinical Student Team Award from the Clinical Legal Education Association (CLEA).

The award recipients are:

• Laura Alton ’20
• Kaitlyn Cox ’20
• Brett Garwood ’20
• Roy Greenia ’20
• Alanah Haskin, rising third-year student
• Megan Hoberg ’20
• Anthony Jabbour ’20
• Ryan Tactac ’20

Assistant Professor (Clinical) Kathryn M. Smolinski, director of Wayne Law’s Legal Advocacy for People with Cancer Clinic (LAPC), nominated the team for the award for their contributions to the clinic during the fall 2019 semester.

LAPC is a medical-legal partnership between Wayne Law and Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Center that offers students training on real-life legal issues while providing an invaluable service to low-income cancer patients receiving treatment at the center.

Throughout the semester, the students had a variety of cases and collectively handled 60 LAPC client matters. The cases ranged from helping with life and health insurance obstacles, drafting estate planning documents, problem-solving employment and housing issues, and helping clients obtain public benefits.

“This class worked so well together to provide excellent services to the cancer patients at Karmanos Cancer Center,” said Smolinski. “They exemplified what it means to be a clinical student: they demonstrated great client rapport, strong writing skills, terrific research and problem-solving, seminar participation, amazing teamwork, consummate professionalism, excellent time and case management and a strong desire to learn and to lead.”

CLEA created the award to honor law students at each law school who have excelled in a clinical course. The award is given annually at the completion of the academic year.
