 Annual Liberty Bell award bestowed

The 2010 Liberty Bell Award of the Genesee County Bar Association was presented to the League of Women Voters of the Flint Area. President Helen Hoyt accepted the award on behalf of the League during the Bar Association's Annual Law Day Luncheon. She reminded luncheon guests that the organization started from the Women’s Suffrage Movement in 1920. She noted that the League is a nonpartisan organization that continues to advocate on important social issues, but only after conducting exhaustive research.

The League was recognized for producing the Citizen's Guide on Electoral Politics and for their involvement with law-related corrections issues including jail overcrowding, sanitation standards, and compliance with Michigan's nutrition program.

“I can think of no better organization than the League of Women Voters of the Flint Area to receive this distinguished award. This non-partisan organization is active in educating voters, studying and advocating on issues concerning child labor and welfare, minimum wage, housing, and education, just to name a few,” said Law Day Committee Co-Chair Deborah AdeOjo.

The Liberty Bell Award started in Genesee County in the early 1960s and soon spread across the country. Today, hundreds of local bar associations bestow this distinguished award to deserving individuals and organizations who have contributed in an exemplary manner to advance the administration and cause of justice in our community.
