5th Annual mentoring inspiration breakfast to take place on January 17, 2011 commemorating National Mentoring Month and the MLK Day of Service

The Big Brothers Big Sisters 100 Men 100 Boys Program will host the 5th Annual Mentoring Inspiration Breakfast to commemorate January’s National Mentoring Month and the annual observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day – a Day of Service across the country.  The primary focus of the event is to highlight the positive and significant impact of mentoring youth, and to engage more individuals, particularly men, in sharing their time as a mentor.  There are over 350 Genesee County children currently waiting to be matched with a Big Brother or Big Sister.

The breakfast will be held at the University of Michigan-Flint NorthBank Center, Monday, January 17, 2011 at 8:30 a.m.  Shawn Dove, Open Society Foundations, New York, NY, will serve as the keynote speaker.  Dove has more than two decades of leadership experience in youth development, education, and community building.  In addition, Dove served as one of the founding directors of New York City’s Beacon School movement in the early 1990s while working with the Harlem Children’s Zone.

This effort, led by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Flint, is supported by the Ruth Mott Foundation; funder of the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Flint 100 Men 100 Boys program – a group effort designed to provide a mentoring experience for unmatched boys who are awaiting a one-on-one match with a Big Brother volunteer.

A $10 donation will support mentoring services for area youth.

The mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters is to provide children, primarily from single-parent homes, with the friendship of a positive role-model.   Big Brothers Big Sisters serves all of Genesee County and is an expert in the field of mentoring, working to develop and enhance resources and to expand services to all children in need of positive guidance and role modeling.
