Team Cooley won the Bronze Medal in its division in the second annual Capital City Dragon Boat races in Lansing, Mich., on Sunday, Sept. 2. This is the first year that members of the Cooley community competed in the race. Assistant Dean Cynthia Ward and Jody Dudash-Bell were inspired last year to put a team together after experiencing the dragon boat race’s inaugural Lansing event in 2011.

“We walked away from the experience feeling like we wanted to be part of a team with this event,” Ward recalled.

Ward and Dudash-Bell signed on as co-captains for Team Cooley and pulled together a 25-member team of faculty, staff, alumni, and friends of the school. Experience was not an issue. “No one on the team was familiar with dragon boat racing,” Ward said, “but that was OK because we were able to experience something new as a team and improve with each race. It was team-building at its best!”

Not all participants were in the boat. The group’s eye-catching team t-shirt was designed by Cooley staff member Dan Membiela.

Ward expressed gratitude for those involved with the team. “Thanks to everyone who supported the team by making a financial donation, providing an in-kind contribution, or coming out to cheer us on.  It was so great to see so many of our colleagues at the race,” Ward said.

Proceeds from the event will be donated to the Team Lansing Foundation and will benefit the recreational development of the riverfront from Michigan Avenue to Saginaw Street, increasing access and usability for residents and visitors.
