More than 160 students from seven high schools in the area attended the 26th Annual Youth Law Conference on December 9 at the MSU Management Education Center in Troy.

The event was presented by the Oakland County Bar Association’s Law-Related Education Committee and was supported by a $15,000 grant from the Oakland County Bar Foundation.

“The event educated high school juniors and seniors about career options in the legal profession, the general legal process, provided tools for better decision-making, and featured a variety of legal issues as they pertain to the students,” said a spokesperson for the OCBA.

Students attending represented Clarkston High School, Lamphere High School, North Farmington High School, Oakland Schools Tech Campus SSE, South Lyon East High School, South Lyon High School, and West Bloomfield High School.

The program topics this year included: Canines in the Law; 10 Things to Remember When Confronted by Police; Healthy Relationships and Dating Violence; Careers in the FBI; Careers in the Courtroom; and Capturing Best Success.

At the conference, students and teachers participated in breakout sessions where they heard from prominent speakers from both the bench and bar. Past conference topics have included computer forensics, street law, military law, domestic violence law, identity protection, cyber-bullying, and law school admission.

One of the stars of this year’s conference was “Lance,” a black Labrador who is part of the Canine Advocacy Program in Oakland County. As a “canine advocate,” Lance and other dogs like him are available to all Oakland County courts that have children of any age that will be testifying.

“The Canine Advocacy Program (CAP) was developed to provide advocacy services to child victims utilizing a highly trained dog to help alleviate the anxiety associated with being involved in the criminal justice system,” said a spokesman for CAP.
