In Memoriam: Walter B. Freihofer

Former Grand Rapids Bar Association president Walter B. Freihofer died on May 26 at the age of 92.

After his admission to the bar in 1948, Freihofer had an illustrious career including forming a successful law firm with future Congressman Richard Vander Veen.

Funeral services will be held June 9 at 11 a.m. at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church (134 N. Division Ave.) in Grand Rapids. There will be no funeral home visitation.



Zoe S. Martinez joins Rhoades McKee

Rhoades McKee announces that Zoe S. Martinez has joined the law firm as an associate.   She will focus her practice in the areas of employment law and general litigation.

While in law school, Martinez was a Judicial Extern for the Honorable David W. McKeague, United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, and an Extern for Brett N. Rodgers, Chapter 13 Trustee for the Western District of Michigan.   Martinez also worked as a Resident Clinician at the MSU Small Business and Non-Profit Law Clinic.

Martinez completed her law degree with honors, summa cum laude, from Michigan State University, College of Law in 2011. She graduated with a Bachelor Degree from Calvin College in 2007.



Law Weathers welcomes new attorneys

Law Weathers welcomes experienced attorneys Kevin O’Dowd and Nicholas Missad to the firm.

O’Dowd has a strong and diverse background in commercial, municipal and business litigation, with an emphasis on construction, real estate/land use, contractual disputes and business tort/trade secret litigation. He is a past president of the Federal Bar Association for the Western District of Michigan, past president of the Litigation Section for the State Bar of Michigan, which gave him its Distinguished Service Award, and former Trustee of the GRBA. He is also a certified mediator.

Massad focuses his practice on complex and high profile divorce cases, custody matters and domestic relations. He regularly provides services for other attorneys on arbitration and mediation proceedings, and has also provided felony and misdemeanor representation through state and federal courts. His background includes representing inmates charged with crimes perpetrated in the prison system of Ionia County. A native of Grand Rapids, Massad is a member of the Ionia County and Grand Rapids Bar Associations.
