Warner Norcross names Harder chair of Family Office Practice Group


Warner Norcross & Judd has appointed Mark K. Harder as chair of the firm’s Family Office Practice Group.

Warner’s Family Office Practice Group offers a full complement of legal services, including tax strategy, estate planning, entity formation and governance, private equity and transaction evaluations, asset protection, risk management, real estate and corporate services and related dispute resolution and litigation.

The group serves family office clients ranging from multimillion-dollar organizations with little or no full-time staff to complex and multi-faceted organizations with a large number of employees and billions in net worth.  The group advises ultra-wealthy families in identifying and achieving long-term opportunities, goals and strategies and avoiding unnecessary risks. The attorneys provide assistance in managing assets and counsel with regard to day-to-day business decisions and issues.

Harder focuses his practice on trusts and estates law, family business and succession planning, business and corporate services and tax law. He counsels and represents high-net-worth individuals, families, family businesses and their owners and closely held businesses. He provides estate planning and estate settlement services, advises on succession planning matters, represents family and closely held businesses in their day-to-day business matters and serves as an adviser and counselor on legal matters to businesses, individuals and their families.

He is a member of the American Bar Association, the State Bar of Michigan, the State Bar of Wisconsin, the Ottawa County Bar Association, the Michigan State Bar Foundation, and the American Bar Foundation. He is a member of Attorneys for Family Held Enterprises, holds a seat on the Institute of Continuing Legal Education advisory board and is a charter member of the Leading Lawyers Advisor Board. Harder is a Fellow of the American College of Trusts and Estates Counsel. From 2003 until 2010, he led the drafting of the Michigan Trust Code, which governs how trusts are established and administered in the state.

Harder has been recognized as a Michigan Super Lawyer since 2006 and was included on the Top 100 and Top 50 Consumer lists in 2014. He has been listed among The Best Lawyers in America since 2005 and was named 2010 Lawyer of the Year for Trusts and Estates in the Grand Rapids area, and a 2014 Leading Lawyer in Michigan.  He is also on the board of the Community Foundation of the Holland/Zeeland Area.

Harder holds a bachelor of business administration with high distinction from the University of Iowa and his doctor of jurisprudence with highest distinction from the University of Iowa College of Law.
