Justices make community connections

Justices of the Michigan Supreme Court journeyed to northern Michigan last week, visiting Petoskey for the Court Community Connections program April 25. The seven-member court, which is missing one member since the recent retirement of Justice Robert Young (and, in developments since then, will be missing another due to Justice Joan L. Larsen’s appointment to the Sixth Circuit Court), heard oral argument at Petoskey High School, offering students an opportunity to better understand the appellate courts and Michigan’s judicial system. In the photo at right: seven judges from Emmet and Charlevoix counties joined their state judicial colleagues for the occasion. Shown are, left to right: Justice  Larsen, Justice David F. Viviano, Justice Brian K. Zahra, Chief Justice Stephen J. Markman, Justice Bridget M. McCormack, and Justice Richard H. Bernstein; (back row) Hon. James N. Erhart, 90th District Court; Hon. Allie Maldonado, Little Traverse Bay Band of Odawa Tribal Court;  Hon. Frederick R. Mulhauser, Emmet and Charlevoix Probate Court; Hon. Charles D. Johnson, 57th Circuit Court, Emmet County; Hon. Roy C. Hayes III, 33rd Circuit Charlevoix County;  Hon. Richard M. Pajtas, 33rd Circuit Court Charlevoix County; and Hon. Richard W. May, retired, 90th District Court.
