Tri-County area partners receive grant

LANSING, MI--Community Economic Development Association of Michigan (CEDAM) and the Asset Independence Coalition (AIC) announce the receipt of an $8,000 grant to improve access to financial services in Eaton, Clinton and Ingham Counties. The grant from the National Community Tax Coalition (NCTC) is designed to assist emerging financial service programs to build local capacity. "We delivered free income tax preparation to over 2,000 households in 2011," said Eric Schertzing, Co-Chair of AIC. "This grant helps us deliver on two key points of our mission - independence and self-sufficiency - by linking our tax clients to high-quality, low-cost financial products and educational resources." "About 7 percent of all Ingham County residents are unbanked and the number rises to 10.1% in the city of Lansing. This partnership between CEDAM and AIC aims to provide opportunities to address this issue,'' said Ross H. Yednock, Director of CEDAM's Asset Building Policy Project. The NCTC grant will be used to market low-cost bank accounts and financial training.
