Sports and entertainment attorney speaks at WMU-Cooley Law School

Alan R. Miller, former college and professional football athlete and co-founder of the NFL Players Association, was the featured speaker during WMU-Cooley Law School's Ninth Annual Howard Soifer Memorial Lecture in Sports and Entertainment Law, on Wednesday, Nov. 12. Miller practices law at his Birmingham, Mich. law firm, Allan R. Miller, P.C., which is considered one of the nation's most preeminent motorsports law firms. Miller represents a number of NASCAR teams and such successful figures as multi-year NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson, Casey Mears, Michael Waltrip Racing Holdings, Danica Patrick Racing, motorcycle racing star Scott Russell, and more. The hallmark of Miller's success has been the long-term relationships he forges with his clients. "You treat your client as though he's a family member," said Miller. "Thinking about the future for them is important." Miller advised students looking to get into sports representation to check with professional sports teams and the bigger sports agency firms for internship possibilities. Many of these organizations, Miller said, hire interns every year. Miller was a standout football player for Boston College, the New England Patriots, and the Oakland Raiders. He earned his B.S.B.A. in finance from Boston College and his J.D., cum laude, from Boston University. Soifer was passionate about the law, sports and his family and was grateful for his legal education at WMU-Cooley. His family, friends and partners have endowed the lecture series in his memory.
