Davis-Dunnings Bar Association to host scholarship banquet

The Davis-Dunnings Bar Association will host its 19th Annual Otis M. Smith Scholarship Banquet at 5:30 p.m. April 17, at the Eagle Eye Golf Club in East Lansing, with a cocktail reception, dinner, awards ceremony, scholarship presentation and Afterglow Party.

The Association will recognize the Hon. Clinton Canady, III, as its Distinguished Barrister; Dr. Olivia Letts, as its Trailblazer; Kappa Alpha Psi – Lansing Alumni Chapter, as its Humanitarian; and Attorney Kristen Simmons, as its Rising Star.

Jeremy Orr, Donshur Oliver, and Winta Gebrezegher will receive the Justice Otis M. Smith, Judge John W. Davis, Jr., and Stuart J. Dunnings, Jr., scholarship, respectively.

The dinner is one of the organization’s most honored traditions and the largest fundraiser for its scholarship fund. Each year, the DDBA awards scholarships to minority law students who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and a commitment to addressing issues affecting the community.

Founded in 1981 as the Lansing Black Lawyers Association by a group of  attorneys led by the Hon. Clinton Canady III and the Hon. Hugh B. Clarke, Jr., the Davis-Dunnings Bar Association is a professional organization recognized by the State Bar of Michigan as a Special Purpose Bar and is an affiliate member of the National Bar Association. Its membership consists of attorneys, representing the private and public sector, judges, and law students. The mission is to foster the professional growth and development of its members; to promote public confidence in, respect for, and knowledge of the law and the legal profession; to advance the causes of equal rights, equal opportunity and equal treatment before the law; and to make significant contributions to the under-represented and under-served members of the greater Lansing Community.

Individual tickets may be purchased for $60 ($450 per table) until April 1, and for $70 ($530 per table) after that date. Student tickets are $35. Sponsorship and advertisement opportunities for this event are available. The DDBA is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.  Proceeds benefit the DDBA community focused programs and scholarship fund.
