English files as candidate for Ingham County Prosecutor

Recently retired U.S. Administrative Law Judge Thomas English has filed as a candidate for Ingham County Prosecutor and is planning an active campaign ahead of the Aug. 2 Democratic Primary election.

English served in the U.S. Army as a JAG officer achieving the rank of Colonel, and has served as a Cabinet Secretary for the Department of Public Safety in New Mexico, as an Assistant U.S. Attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice, and as a New Mexico state trooper.

Notably during English's career, he has helped change U.S. policy in Afghanistan to an evidence-based detention policy approved by President Obama, oversaw the largest-ever prosecution in U.S. District Court in New Mexico of a violent gang that targeted African American males, protected one of the first-ever military personnel found to be in violation of 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell,' and oversaw a department with over 1,300 employees and a budget exceeding $90 million.

Locally, English founded 'Kid Safe Williamston', an organization that lobbies to lower speed limits near Williamston public schools, has worked to develop specialty law clinics at Cooley and MSU Law to serve veterans and mentally handicapped claimants, and serves as a career mentor to young people.

English has lived in Williamston since 2004 with his wife, April. They have six children and seven grandchildren.
