Michael Lawrence is the new Foster Swift Collin & Smith P.C. Professor of Constitutional Law at Michigan State University College of Law, a position funded by Foster Swift, for five years.

Lawrence’s scholarship has centered almost entirely on the United States Constitution. Lawrence explains the Constitution as work in progress, moving from its inception as an incredibly flawed document to one that respects civil and individual rights.

Lawrence described the Warren Supreme Court Years (1953-1969) as his favorite era of constitutional interpretation because of its emphasis on civil liberties.

If he had to pick one, his favorite Amendment to the Federal Constitution would be the 14th because it incorporates the Bill of Rights to the states and grants equal protection and due process to all.

“The classroom is the most rewarding part of the job, spurring excitement and passion, or at the very least, interest, for the rule of law,” Lawrence said. He enjoys vibrant discussions spanning from office hours with individual students to respectful disagreements in class, as long as everyone involved is moving toward the common goal of justice. He especially enjoys the time right before the final exam when students finally understand the nuances of the law and can engage in high-level of conversation.

“I feel grateful for the recognition because I love what I do,” Lawrence said. “I’m honored that Foster Swift found me worthy for researching and teaching something I’m passionate about.”
