Calley named recipient of the Michigan Press Association's Peter Pettalia Memorial Sunshine Award

The Peter Pettalia Memorial Sunshine Award is given annually to public servants that strive to promote and protect government openness. The award is named after former State Representative Peter Pettalia of Presque Isle who embodied support and understanding of the importance of keeping citizens informed through a transparent government.

This year’s recipient also embodies these attributes. Representative Julie Calley (R-Portland) has consistently supported FOIA reforms that would subject the Governor’s office and the legislature to Freedom of Information. She has been a co-sponsor of the package of bills introduced and passed by the House for the last three legislative sessions.

She is also a strong supporter of the importance of public notice in newspapers because she understands the value provided in keeping the public informed about decisions made by local government officials. Rep. Calley knows newspapers will ensure that the public has full access to government meetings, actions and plans.

Dirk Milliman, Chairman of the MPA Public Policy Committee made the following statement; “During her entire elected career, Rep. Calley has put the need to share information with the public at the forefront of her agenda.
She has always been an advocate for transparency and openness at all levels of government. Her leadership on issues concerning public information are to be commended.”
