Ingham County property tax forfeitures stabilizing

MASON, MI--Ingham County Treasurer Eric Schertzing reports that the number of tax forfeited properties in Ingham County is stabilizing.

Property is in forfeiture status when the property taxes remain delinquent for over 12 months. In the 2006 tax year, Ingham County had a 24% increase in forfeitures compared to 2005. In the 2007 tax year, the increase was 25.6% compared 2006. Last Friday, unpaid property taxes for the 2008 tax year went in to forfeiture and Ingham County experienced a 8.5% increase compared to 2007.

''The encouraging news is that forfeitures are rising at a much lower percentage then in the past few years,'' Schertzing said. ''The downside is that the raw numbers are still rising. I am optimistic that overall we are seeing the start of a stabilizing trend in Ingham County,'' Schertzing said.
