Foreclosure Activity Surpasses 2009

MASON, MI--Ingham County Treasurer Eric Schertzing and Register of Deeds Curtis Hertel report today that the number of Sheriff's Deeds in Ingham County for 2010 surpassed the total number of Sheriff's Deeds filed in 2009 with December numbers yet to be added. In 2009, 1,701 Sheriff's Deeds were recorded in Ingham County and as of the end of November, 1,714 have been recorded so far this year.

In the mortgage foreclosure process, a Sheriff's Deed typically starts a six (6) month redemption period for the property.

This is discouraging news and Ingham County Register of Deeds Curtis Hertel said he "wants to encourage citizens who are having trouble making mortgage payments to call 211 or visit www.holdontoyourhome.org for a referral to a financial counselor."

"One hopeful indicator is that in November 2010 the county recorded 85 Sheriff's Deeds compared to 127 in November 2009," said Ingham County Treasurer Eric Schertzing.
