Jackson training program named national innovator

The U.S. Department of Labor has announced that The Academy for Manufacturing Careers, the skilled trades training program developed and managed by the Jackson Area Manufacturers Association (JAMA), has been selected as a 21st Century Registered Apprenticeship Trailblazer and Innovator. This award recognizes programs, practices, strategies, or partnerships that demonstrate an innovative or trailblazing effort that has had significant impact on the history of Registered Apprenticeship and/or implications for Registered Apprenticeship in the 21st Century. "We are humbled by the receipt of this award," said Scott Halstead, chairman of the academy's manufacturers board of review, in a statement. "It truly reflects the dedication and hard work of the academy staff and is a reminder that the academy is focused on doing the right things." He noted that the academy has worked with youth for several years and has provided opportunities in the classrooms, at camps and in members' manufacturing facilities to instill interest in manufacturing and the career opportunities the industry provides. Since its inception in 2005, the Academy has graduated 51 apprentices and currently serves more than 100 active apprenticeship trainees. More than 600 youth and 5,000 adults have received advanced manufacturing and engineering-related training through the academy. The academy's K-12 offerings include youth educational and career exploration opportunities beginning at kindergarten and progressing through high school. Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis has invited representatives from the Academy for Manufacturing Careers and JAMA to join her in Washington, D.C., on August 1, 2012, to receive the award and to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the signing of the National Apprenticeship Act. The Jackson Area Manufacturers Association (JAMA) is a non-profit professional organization that has been serving the manufacturing community since 1937. Published: Thu, Jul 19, 2012
