Two hundred local families enjoyed free Thanksgiving dinners thanks to the efforts of students from the Ann Arbor campus of Cooley Law School.

Students, faculty and members of the legal community from the Michigan Association for Justice donated food and gift cards to buy turkeys, and the students delivered them two days before the holiday.

Student Bar Association President Kristina Bilowus became involved with the "Making Meals Happen" program two years ago during her first term at Cooley. She was also motivated by the fact that Dean Martha Moore, who began the program and is on sabbatical this term, was counting on the students to keep it going.

"I participated because is a fundamental necessity for our community; we have many families counting on this program," said Bilowus. "Our school fosters much pro bono work, but this extends beyond that mission. Without following through on our word and not assisting others, I believe we fail to meet our goals as a person, let alone a lawyer."

It's a tribute to Cooley that its students are so dedicated to giving back to the community, said Ann Arbor attorney Chad Engelhardt.

"These students are learning first hand that as lawyers we are blessed to be in a position to able to help those in our community in need," said Engelhardt, "just as we are blessed to be able to make a meaningful difference in our client's lives through our good works."

"It is easy to forget the truly important things in life - friendship, kindness, consideration, and generosity," Bilowus said. "This program is an opportunity for the qualities that matter most to be exemplified."
