The name of former Jackson police officer Chad Dermyer, a Virginia State Trooper killed in the line of duty March 31 in a shooting at a Greyhound Bus Station in Richmond, Va., will be included in the Jackson Law Enforcement Memorial ceremony that will be held on May 4.

A post honoring Dermyer can be found at the "Jackson PD Officer Down" website at www.odmp.org/agency/1846-jackson-police-department-michigan.

Jackson PD officers also honored their former colleague by wearing black and blue ribbons wrapped around their badges after the shooting.

Dermyer, 37, who was a Jackson native, 1996 graduate of Columbia High School, and four-year veteran of the U. S. Marines, served as a police officer for the City of Newport News before working for the Jackson PD from 2008 to 2011.

He graduated from the Virginia State Police Academy in 2014 where he was class vice president.

His first patrol assignment was to the Chesapeake Division's Area 46 Office; and he had recently transferred to the state police Counter-Terrorism and Criminal Interdiction Unit.

"Chad was a outstanding officer," said Jackson Police Chief Matt Heins, who attended the April 5 funeral service in Hampton, Va., a service that drew about 3,000 people.

"He was professional, had a great work ethic, cared deeply for this community and had a smile that lit up the room.

"On behalf of the city of Jackson and the Jackson police department our deepest condolences go out to Chad's wife, children, parents and extended family."

Other local personnel who attended the funeral include Lt. Chris Simpson, Sgt. Jennifer Flick, Sgt John Lillie, and Officer Scott Goings, all from the Jackson Police Department; Officer Ric Gillespie from Blackman Township Police Department; firefighter Pat Syrek from the Summit Fire Dept.; Trooper Brian Russell and Sgt. Steve Tsylenko from the Michigan State Police; and Deputies Kyle Ruge, Jay Truchan, and Josh Hudson from the Jackson Sheriff's Dept.

Dermyer is survived by his wife, Michelle; children, Page and Phillip; parents, brother and sister; and many relatives and close friends.
