Jonesville trooper is honored

Michigan State Police (MSP) Director Col. Peter C. Munoz has announced that Trooper James Weldy of the Jonesville Post is the recipient of the MSP Lifesaving Award.

On Oct. 31, 2009, Weldy was on a dinner break when he noticed an 8-year-old child choking on his food.

The child's mother was attempting to help, but was so far unable to dislodge the food.

Weldy stepped in to assist and, using his training on the proper techniques for clearing an obstructed airway, he eventually dislodged the item and the child began breathing on his own.

Upon reviewing the circumstances of this incident, the MSP Board of Awards concluded Weldy's quick actions and knowledge of first aid techniques helped save the child's life.

Weldy enlisted with the department in 2000, graduating as a member of the 119th Trooper Recruit School.

After graduation he was assigned to the Jonesville Post.
