Garden grows outside Juvenile Division

The Macomb County Circuit Court Juvenile Division, in partnership with the Michigan State University Extension Master Gardener Program, developed a community garden this summer outside the youth home. Organizers say the project was aimed at providing opportunities for court-involved youth to complete community service and “learn valuable life skills.” Macomb County Circuit Court Chief Judge John Foster (fifth from right) is pictured with staff volunteers and youth as they prepared the area for a variety of gardens and vegetable plants. The garden, Foster said, “offers a restorative justice opportunity for youth who have offended against their community,” adding that he was inspired “to see such a commitment to environmental practices and community service right in our own backyard.” Some of the produce will be sold at a local farmer’s market with proceeds being reinvested in the garden. Foster emphasized that all of the money, time and materials invested in the project were donated “with no budgetary impact on the community.”
