Expected policy seeks to curb faculty-student relationships

ANN ARBOR (AP) — The University of Michigan’s updated sexual misconduct policy is expected to include a ban on faculty members from having romantic or sexual relationships with undergraduate students.

The Ann Arbor News reports the updated policy is scheduled to take effect in 2019 and is detailed in the University Record.

The policy also would prohibit faculty from having romantic or sexual relationships with any graduate or professional student in the same discipline or academic program as themselves.

The revisions are expected to be finalized and announced in February.

Meanwhile, the newspaper says a revised policy for students and procedures at the University of Michigan will include the right of cross-examination during disciplinary hearings related to allegations of sexual misconduct.

The update taking effect in January follows a federal appeals court ruling.

Crash victim’s love for dogs factors into judge’s sentence

HOLLAND (AP) — A woman who was blamed for a fatal crash in western Michigan must perform community service in honor of the victim’s love of dogs.

The Holland Sentinel reports 56-year-old Rhonda Vandermyde was sentenced recently to probation and 300 hours of service at the Humane Society.

Relatives told a judge that Ruth Bull’s favorite cause after family was her three Chihuahuas: Zoe, Zeke and Jorge.

Vandermyde pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor for a July crash that killed 60-year-old Bull.

Vandermyde, a driver for VanEerden Trucking, told police that she was adjusting the air conditioning and didn’t see vehicles stopping for a traffic signal in Port Sheldon Township. She struck a van and a Jeep driven by Bull.

Vandermyde says she’s “sorry for what everybody is going through.”

Cheesecake giveaway clogs roads, draws crowds — and police

ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) — A large-scale cheesecake giveaway clogged not only arteries but also the roads surrounding a Virginia restaurant where one person was taken to a hospital and faces a disorderly conduct charge.

Arlington County police say they received calls last week about traffic disruptions as a Cheesecake Factory restaurant in Clarendon was participating in a national giveaway of 40,000 cheesecake slices in conjunction with the food-delivery service DoorDash.

One individual refused police commands to leave the restaurant and resisted efforts at removal. Police said the individual requested medical attention after the altercation and was taken to a hospital.

Even the dogs get snow boots at this police department

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — A police dog in South Dakota is learning how to walk a beat in snow boots.

Video posted by the Rapid City police department shows Jary trying to adjust having the boots on its paws. The dog awkwardly lifts its legs while getting used to the new boots.

The department says it equips its officers for the chilly weather, “even the furry ones!”
